"She imagined the fluctuating dynamics in their marriage flying around them like molecules, shape-shifting genetic code. You're worried. Now I am. Now it's your turn again. Colorful protein pearls rearranging at a moments notice to accommodate David's nerves or her own."
The Most Fun We Ever Had is a multi-generational story following David and Marilyn and their four girls. The family secrets that have stayed concealed for so long, come to the surface, drawing new blood from old wounds and shaking down the foundation the family was built on.
This was my affair book. I was reading my usual 3 books at a time and one of the books was particularly spooky, so I decided to start The Most Fun We Ever Had, because it was safe enough for me to read right up until I fell asleep. No matter what I was reading, I was always thinking about this book. Sorry all the other books maybe if you were younger, or sexier, or had better legs, you could have been the one.
The writing here was beautiful and luscious and maybe a little pretentious-- this happens to be exactly my taste. I loved each of these characters, in all their flawed dysfunction, so fiercely. This book just had all of my favorite story elements! Multi-generational family saga? ✔
Dysfunctional family dynamic? ✔
Strong female characters? ✔
Juicy family secrets? ✔
Reconcilliation themes? Uhm... kind of ✔
I couldn't put this book down, and when I did put it down, I was itching to pick it back up. Until this moment I didn't know a 500+ page book could make so much use of every page, while still nailing the pacing and engaging the reader. I loved this novel so so deeply. I can't wait for Lombardo to put more of her writing out in the world!
CW: infant loss. Detailed scenes of traumatic birth.
