The Dry by Jane Harper

“Death rarely changes how we feel about someone. Heightens it, more often than not.”

Aaron Falk finds himself back in his small hometown after he receives word that one of his closest friends was murdered alongside his wife and child. The shock that sweeps through the small town pushes Aaron to investigate the murder with a local cop, even though his primary job in the FBI is in the finance department. Aaron's investigation is made even harder when events of the past turn the small town against Aaron.

I somehow missed the release of this book years ago despite it being in a genre I usually follow! Shout out to What Should I Read Next book podcast for putting it on my radar! The Dry Succeeded in having a very engaging story line. There was a very strong since of place and the added drought of this Australian small town added an interesting nature element. I listened to this on audiobook and I feel like it rooted me in the book more solidly thanks to the author's Australian accent.

I don't have an especially difficult time suspending belief to read a book, but with this book I did struggle a little bit. I wasn't quite sold on the way this mystery panned out when everything was revealed at the end. In addition, I am honestly still confused about how an FBI agent that worked in the finance department was allowed to investigate a crime in which people he personally knew were murdered? Some of these little details missed the mark for me and brought my overall enjoyment down. However, I did enjoy it enough to pick up the sequel and in the midst of a reading slump that does feel like a win!
